The Center for Community Partnerships and the Digital Technology for Democracy Lab at the University of Virginia (UVA) are pleased to announce the 2026 Voices of Democracy Student Writing Contest. The contest invites 6th–12th grade students in Charlottesville City and Albemarle County, whether attending public, private, or homeschool programs, to reflect on the theme, “The Next 250 Years.”
As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this year's contest asks students to consider not only the future of democracy, but also how emerging technologies may influence civic participation, public discourse, and democratic institutions in the years ahead.
Students should answer the prompt:
"It has been 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As we look toward the next 250 years, what should democracy in America look like, and how can young people and emerging technologies work together to shape its future?”
Students should submit original writing of 150-300 words. The 1st place winner will also have their work displayed as a poster presentation during the 2026 Community Engagement Summit: Co-Creating a Thriving Community at UVA on October 15.
All submissions are due September 30, 2026.
Prizes: 1st Place $500; 2nd Place $250; 3rd Place $100; Honorable Mention $50.
